Notes: This character is used as a suffix to mark the plural for personal pronouns and human nouns. For example, 车夫们 'rickshaw drivers.' (Lao She, 2003, p. 200) It is pronounced in the neutral tone. It began to be used in this sense in spoken Chinese from the Song (Norman 1988, p. 121). 们 is the ninth most frequently used word in the Beijing Language Institute's 1985 frequency wordlist (Ho 2002, '们'; NCCED '们').
